Implementation of Special Humanitarian Status for Myanmar Nationals staying in the ROK - Due to escalating political situation in Myanmar including violent suppression of protests by military and police with civilian casualties- |
❍ The Ministry of Justice (Minister Park Beom Kye) has implemented a special measure as of March 15, 2021 to allow nationals of Myanmar to stay in the ROK on humanitarian grounds until the domestic situation stabilizes in Myanmar, reaffirming the ROK government’s stance against violence which strongly condemns the violent suppression of protesters by Myanmar‘s military and police and calls for an immediate end to the use of force against civilians, as well as the release of those detained including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. ❍ About 25,000 foreign residents from Myanmar with long-term or short-term visa status in the country are eligible for this humanitarian measure, with the details as follows. - (For Myanmar nationals staying legally in the ROK) Those with soon-to-expire immigration status* who wish to extend their stay due to the political situation in Myanmar will be granted with a temporary permission to stay. * EPS workers with expiring visa, international students graduating or completing their study, short-term visitors with validity up to 90 days and others ※ Those eligible for Extension of Stay or Change of Status will be granted as normal. - (For Myanmar nationals with expired visa status) Considering the ongoing instability in Myanmar, a voluntary, rather than forced, departure will be granted after the political situation eases in Myanmar. ❍ Minister Park of Justice stated that the measure was taken on a humanitarian ground to minimize damage to civilians as a result of violent repression of protests by police and military forces in Myanmar, adding that the Ministry will spare no efforts in supporting Myanmar people’s aspiration for democracy, as well as to put an end to violence against citizens of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.
